This past season has been a humbling journey,
—a time of coming face-to-face with the depth of my weaknesses, only to be overwhelmed by the far greater depth of His mercy and strength.
For so long, I struggled with the words of Paul: “I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Boast? About my weaknesses? That felt impossible. Weakness was something I worked hard to hide—something that felt shameful in my walk with Christ.
I subconsciously buried my emotional pain, my fear of abandonment, my moments of failure. I thought being strong was what mattered. After all, I knew God was my comfort and strength. I believed He would rescue me, and yet I wrestled with a nagging voice that whispered:
Shouldn’t I know better by now? Shouldn’t I be stronger in this area?
Trading My Righteousness for His
The truth was, I was still relying on my own flimsy righteousness. I was offended at the thought of messing up—binging a show, failing to control my emotions, or neglecting my spiritual disciplines—and then turning around to worship Jesus.
It felt wrong to sense His peace and presence after I’d “messed up.” How could He meet me with love when I clearly didn’t deserve it?
But then, God reminded me of a freeing truth: even on my best day—the days when I wake up early, spend time in the Word, stay disciplined, and praise Him wholeheartedly—my own righteousness is still just filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6).
What I’ve learned is this: whether I’ve fallen short or had a “perfect” day, my response to His grace must remain the same. My access to His throne isn’t based on my performance—it’s based on His mercy.
The Confidence to Approach His Throne
Hebrews 4:16 reminds us: “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
What gives us this confidence?
- It’s not our works but His finished work on the cross (Titus 3:5).
- It’s His righteousness imputed to us (2 Corinthians 5:21).
- It’s His blood that covers a multitude of faults (1 Peter 4:8).
This is the beauty of the gospel. Even in our weakest, most broken moments, He invites us to come boldly—because His grace is always sufficient.

Jackie, you are such an inspiration. Thank you for sharing and enlightening me on asking Jesus what’s on His heart for me instead of what I think I need from Him. It’s not all about me, but Him.
Thank you Debbie! I’m so glad it helped you in such a beautiful way. 🙂
