In 2018, I took a leap of faith and decided to go against the grain, saying “yes” to starting an online business.

I committed to what I believe God has called me to do, pouring my time, energy, and resources into building something meaningful—even though, at first, there were no tangible returns. I paid for blog hosting software for years without seeing growth, but deep down, I knew this journey was about so much more than immediate success; it was about obedience to the Lord.

Sure, saying no to a full and steady paycheck wasn’t easy. But what I’ve learned along the way is that what I’ve said “yes” to is so much more valuable than I could have imagined. God has grown me in countless ways, allowing me to experience His love and faithfulness beyond what I could have imagined, transforming me from the inside out on this journey of trusting Him.

Here are the six biggest benefits I noticed, the biggest ways you’ll grow, on this journey of entrepreneurship.

1. You Become a Decision-Maker

Decision-making can feel intimidating, especially at first. You might find yourself stuck, agonizing over even the smallest things—like I did, taking 30 minutes to simply decide which coffee shop to work from. But one piece of advice changed the way I approached decisions: “If you make a decision and it’s wrong, work to make it right.” That shift in perspective gave me the freedom to move forward without fear.

As an entrepreneur, you’ll learn that decision-making isn’t about getting it perfect. It’s about progress. When you’re the one calling the shots, you start to realize that the act of deciding itself moves things forward. And the more decisions you make, the more confident you become. You trust yourself to figure things out, even if things don’t go as planned. That’s a huge part of your growth.

2. You Get Comfortable with the Mess

Starting a business is messy—there’s no way around it. You have to jump in, make mistakes, and get your hands dirty. If you’re someone who likes things neat and controlled, like me, this part can be uncomfortable at first. But without a little mess, there’s no real growth. I’m reminded of the proverb, “Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean, but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox.” If everything is tidy and predictable, you’re not stretching yourself.

The clean, safe path might feel easier, but when you’re in the thick of things, navigating the unexpected, that’s where real progress happens. Yes, people will question your skills, request you give them something for free, and then wonder who are you to be in this space and this time. Who gave you the right to do what you do and charge what you charge?  But these messy moments are where the magic is. You’re creating, moving forward, and learning how to gracefully “deal with” people as you go. And there’s a deep sense of satisfaction that comes from embracing the mess instead of avoiding it.

3. You Start Seeing Your Business in a New Light

At first, your business might feel like your baby—like something you need to protect and keep close. I know that’s how I felt in the beginning. But over time, as you grow, you start to see things differently. You become more comfortable with taking risks, putting ideas out there, and seeing what sticks. Your business stops feeling like something you need to shield, and instead, it becomes something you’re actively growing and refining. You find freedom in testing ideas and letting go of the need for perfection. Every step, whether it succeeds or fails, “is either working for you, or working on you.”

4. You Gain Confidence in Your Calling

As you build your business, you’ll start to see the value of what you offer. At first, it’s natural to wonder if people will actually pay for your products or services. I know that doubt well. But as you keep showing up and honing your skills, something shifts. You begin to see the difference you’re making for those you serve. You’re solving a problem for them that they couldn’t have solved for themselves, and that’s when you realize that God has truly called you to this work.

You understand that He has equipped you for it, giving you all you need to carry out your purpose. With that knowledge, your confidence grows—not in yourself alone, but in the God who called you. You stop doubting whether you’re capable because you know that He is the one enabling you. That confidence allows you to own your value, and it changes everything. When you believe in what you offer, others do too, and you invite them to grow alongside you.

5. You Start Exploring New Possibilities

One of the most exciting parts of entrepreneurship is the world of possibilities that open up. Your imagination starts to run wild with ideas, and you see opportunities where you didn’t before. You’ll discover new layers to your work, new niches within niches that you didn’t even realize existed. It’s an exciting place to be, but it also requires balance.

It’s easy to get caught up in trying to do too much, too quickly. I’ve learned that it’s important to pace yourself, to find that sweet spot between dreaming big and staying grounded. There’s a lot of beauty in taking things one step at a time, letting your ideas develop without rushing the process. You don’t need to do it all at once. The journey itself is full of growth, and it’s okay to savor that.

6. You Discover the Freedom of Entrepreneurship

There’s a certain kind of freedom I’ve discovered as I began this journey—one I had been searching for while working a 9 to 5, or a 3 to 11, and so on. I remember dreading my late shifts at the coffee shop, especially the ones from three to close. I’d waste my entire day, not being productive, but instead draining my energy by simply dreading the upcoming shift. Those retail days were the worst. But looking back, I’m glad I had them because they make me appreciate this freedom even more.

I didn’t know it was possible to work from my laptop. I didn’t know I could structure my work the way I wanted. I didn’t know I could use the skills and gifts God gave me to earn a living. It didn’t seem possible for me.

But there’s a real freedom in shaping how you work. Once you know the problem you solve and who you solve it for, you get to decide how you’ll solve it— in a way that plays to your strengths, your gifts, and the way you enjoy working. That kind of freedom is beautiful.

In Conclusion

One of the beautiful surprises of entrepreneurship is the variety it brings to your life. No two days look the same, and as you grow your skill, or grow in your gift, your business will grow right along. A mentor once told me, “Your gift will make room for you,” and I’ve seen that play out over time. The more I lean into my gift of writing—the more opportunities arise.

Each blog post leads to something else—a podcast, a video, or social media content. It all works together, and as I refine my message, I see how everything I do connects and builds. That’s been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.

Starting and growing a business is one of the most challenging yet rewarding things you can do.

It’s not just about building a brand or making money—it’s about becoming the woman God created you to be, stepping fully into your purpose, your Kingdom assignment, and embracing the lessons along the way.

Every decision, every risk, and every lesson stretches you, not only as a business owner but as a woman after God’s heart, committed to serving others. You’ll realize you’re not just building a business—you’re crafting a life and legacy that reflects the glory of God.

So, if you’ve felt called to start a business or ministry, be encouraged.

It won’t always be easy, but the freedom, growth, and fulfillment that come from walking in alignment with God’s plan are worth every step. Trust Jesus, yield your life to His, trust yourself, and embrace the process. The journey is waiting—go ahead and take that first step.

Be encouraged.
