Why is God good?
Wow, so many reasons come to mind.
As I sit here trying to find the words…attempting to put into words the incredible vastness of God’s grace, love, justice, and mercy…from what I’ve seen in my life…I truly don’t know where to begin.
I do know that anything I write won’t do Him justice, because God’s goodness truly is indescribable.
When I started writing this post, I wanted to compile an organized, well-structured list of how God is described as good in the Bible.
But as I agonized, and even cried, over this post, just desiring you, my reader, to get even a small glimpse of what I’ve experienced for myself… it became too overwhelming.
Gosh, the depths of His love.
Experiencing His perfect wisdom displayed in my life; His perfect plans coming forth even in the midst of all my failures, confusion, heartache, weaknesses, and offense.
Words cannot express. And it’s left me in tears.
All I can say is that if you don’t know God for yourself and aren’t actively seeking Him, you are truly experiencing life’s greatest tragedy.
To reject a Love that went down to the depths of the Earth for you.
To reject a Love that became as low as one could get for you.
To reject a Love that’s still standing with arms outstretched and open wide. Patiently waiting just to be with you.
In my book…that’s a God who is good.
1. God works to make things good.
In my life, God has worked everything for my good and for His glory.
I marvel at how God has used and turned it all to good, no matter what life has thrown my way. Because the more I’ve seen the work of the enemy in my life, the more I see the hand of God using it for my good. The enemy just can’t win.
When his attacks become more profound, they only draw me closer to God.
I come out on the other side with an even greater praise, and sometimes think, “devil, why even bother?” God wins.
The Bible says God laughs at the plans of the enemy. He knows they are fruitless and end in confusion. God’s Kingdom will come, and His Will will be done.
The wicked plot against the godly; they snarl at them in defiance. But the Lord just laughs, for he sees their day of judgment coming. -Psalm 37:12-13
2. God’s wisdom is good.
God has given us a free will that He’s purposed never to violate. And even with the freedom to choose, good or evil…God still finds a way to lead our paths to Him.
He woos us with His kindness, love, and mercy.
Through life’s circumstances, God allows us see how following Him leads to life, while following the sin nature leads to death.
Instead of creating an army of religious workers, He creates “lovesick worshippers” who gladly lay down their lives for Him.
Obedience equals love when it comes to Jesus.
Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them. -John 14:21
But obedience equals works when it comes to every other religion.
Works to gain acceptance from a god created by human hands.
There’s only One way to the Father.
There’s only One who went to the grave and took the keys from death and hell…to restore what was taken from you.
There’s only One seated on the throne, with love and fire in His eyes. Pleading day and night with the Father for you. The One who calls you friend.
What other god calls you friend?
So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God. -Romans 5:11
3. We don’t have to pay the price we deserve for choosing evil in the light of a God who gave us everything.
We deserve the grave because we’ve violated the will of a good God.
God is good. Sin is not. When we choose sin over God, we’ve chosen death over life without realizing it, because life without Jesus leads to death.
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. -Romans 6:23
We were already condemned to die, but God in His goodness had a plan even before time began.
Before He created a thing.
God saw you from afar off, and His love for you burned just as hotly as it does now.
In my book, that’s good.
4. Creation testifies to His goodness.
Open your eyes and look around you.
See the beautiful sunrise, hear the birds, feel the sun on your face, sink your toes deep into the warm earth, and snuggle with your pet. Creation testifies to the goodness of the One who created it.
Instead of praising mother nature, praise God; His goodness has been written on our hearts.
The fact that we want to see the oppressed set free and the innocent protected…we’re witnessing the heart of God displayed through us.
They know the truth about God because He has made it obvious to them. For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see His invisible qualities-His eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God. -Romans 1:20
5. God is good because He desires a relationship with you.
God waits for you. Patiently knocking at the door of your heart, waiting for you to let Him in.
I slept, but my heart was awake, when I heard my lover knocking and calling: “Open to me, my treasure, my darling, my dove, my perfect one. My head is drenched with dew, my hair with the dampness of the night. -Song of Songs 5:2
What other god would do that?
All other gods are demanding. They require your devotion and never take into consideration your feelings, your heart’s desires, and what you delight in. These other gods care nothing about your story, they have no desire to soothe your heartache, your pain.
They only demand worship.
But this Jesus.
This God who is good. He bottles your tears. He takes your pain and uses it to give you a purpose. He brings life. He offers living water, the water that fills you to overflowing, never running dry.
This God who simply gives.
For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. -John 3:16
I urge you not to reject this God who is good.
When you reject God, you reject all that is good in the world. That’s why the Bible says hell is a place full of darkness, and isolation, and torment. It’s a place devoid of God’s goodness for those who reject Him.
But God. His plan succeeded.
Countless men and women throughout the ages testify to God’s goodness and have chosen Him. They all have a story to tell.
These children of God praise Him willingly, not compulsively. They praise God because He is good. And worthy of their praise.
